DRAWER XXII
Decomposed Pictures

Bazeos Tower
July 23– September 2, 2011
Daily: 10:00 - 17:00
Opening: Saturday, July 23, at 20:30

The exhibition organized every year at the Bazeos Tower, under the auspices of the Naxos Festival, is a result of exploration, attraction and cooperation. This year, the organizers revisit the photographic archives of the Benaki Museum, and, together with the curators of the archives, retrieve some very original and interesting material.
The exhibition is about photographs that would have never been put on display under normal circumstances: images that, despite their accuracy from a photographic point of view, have lost their narrative context.
In an archival photographic collection the loss of narrative context is the result of the partial or total destruction of the original material. This damage is mainly the result of unavoidable chemical reactions within its substrate, worsened by unsuitable environmental conditions in their storage prior to their induction into the Benaki Museum collections. What sparked the creation of this exhibition were the contents of drawer XXII, part of a metal filing cabinet located in an area housing the Archive’s original photographic material.
The contents of this “Drawer XXII” were an integral part of the archives of many well-known photographers such as Nicholas Tombazis, Dimitris Harissiades, Pericles Papahatzidakis, and Nelly’s and, despite extensive chemical decay to the substrate, they had been preserved. Obviously these images are not representative of the body of work of these photographers nor had they been stored with the intention of ever being put on display.
The “beauty” of decay was the source of inspiration for Benaki Museum photographer Leonidas Kourgiantakis. The “destroyed” negatives have been approached from a fresh perspective and were developed into images of intense aesthetic interest.
The presentation of these photographs in Naxos can be seen as a counterpoint to the ravages of time that are prevalent on the 17th century tower that hosts the exhibition. In an environment of this kind, the viewer is called upon to look beyond the apparent decay, from a personal perspective, to discover the “beauty”….to discover the essence within the remains. ‘Less is more’ after all, is the theme of the 11th Naxos Festival, which is characterized by presentations that are rich in content but minimal in form.

Coordinator: Marios Vazeos (AEON)

Hello,

First of all about fishing, there is no organized business in Naxos doing this, you can only go on a scuba diving or snorkeling trip and you can find all the business doing this here www.naxosguide.eu/scubadiving/ . I guess that you could find someone on the port to hire and take you with his boat but i guess you have to be lucky and make a good choice in order to have fun.

You are right, there is no kayaking in Naxos, in Greece we use this term for rivers, when you do this in the sea we call it canoeing. You can rent a canoe in all the windsurfing businesses which you can find here www.naxosguide.eu/windsurf/ .

There is no sightseeing with horses, there are two kind of trips, the first is the beach as you said and in the second you follow a path through the fields. You should keep in mind that horse riding is rather expensive, it costs about 50 Euro per person, so 250 Euro for your family.

I hope i didn't disappoint you :) I think you should take a look at all the Naxos activities at www.naxosguide.eu/activities.htm . Sailing would be a nice thing to do but it is as expensive as the horse riding.

Let me know if i can help you with something.
Enjoy your holidays!

Hello,

We are a family of five traveling to Naxos, July 4-9; mom, dad and three teens. We would like to go on a fishing excursion or something low key as hiring someone to take us out fishing on their boat. We would also like to go kyaking - I have heard this is possible, but only find info about canoeing - perhaps this is what it is called in Greece? What area would have these rentals and lastly, are there such things as horse or donkey trips to villages and sight seeing, besides just the beaches?

Thanks so much!

Hello!

Actually you don't have many choices, the international airports you can use to come to Naxos is Athens, Santorini and Mykonos. The ferry connection between Mykonos and Naxos is not usually very good so i wouldn't recommend it. Most people who don't want to use Athens airport, fly to Santorini and take the Blue Star ferry which arrives in Naxos at around 6 o'clock in the afternoon. On the other hand if you already have a booking in a hotel, 22:45 or even 23:45 (when the ferry goes to Syros island as well, 2 times every week) is not very late, you can still take a taxi and check in at your hotel, even if the hotel is in Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna or Plaka.

Hello, we are planning to visit Naxos in September. We come from the south of Germany. It seems to me, it's better to fly from Germany to another airport than the one in Athen. The ferry from Piraeus is arriving at 22:45 in Naxos, this is quite late if you still have to travel to your hotel outside of Naxos city or to search the hotel. Is there a another possibility?

The only two restaurants i know that usually have live bouzouki are Flamingo and Apolafsis and they are both on the second floor at the port road. I don't think they have live music every day but you can ask, Flamingo is more probable to have. About dancing i can't tell, it depends on the client's mood and the wine :)-D
Oh, that was a little bit dissapointing :(
We so enjoyed the performances in May.

Do you know where we can listen to some bozouki-music and perhaps watch someone dancing to it aswell? Maybe some restaurants have some form of entertainment...
Looking forward to Naxos again :))

Hi Ellie,

The open air cinema is located about 150 metres from the police station on the way to the bus stop to Agios Prokopios beach. It is open until the end of September and you can see the film program here .

The Naxos Festival in Bazeos Tower finishes tomorrow (3rd of September) so i guess you are a little unlucky on that. September is usually a quiet month in Naxos and Greece generally, i don't know of any events or festivals taking place during this month but you can still ask when you arrive.

Enjoy your holidays in Naxos!

I have a couple of suggestions for you, the cheapest (with good quality) restaurant i know is Elliniko, about 100 metres from the town's main square. Another quite cheap restaurant where many locals eat is Maro's, very close to the town's main square as well. I think you should try them both and make your decision. Have a nice time in our island!
