Smirida
Smirida

Smirida or Smirigli is an important industrial material, used for the manufacture of sandpaper, and grinding wheels. For over 2500 years, and until recently, the
most important place of smirida mining was the eastern part of Naxos and
specially Apiranthos and
Koronos villages. Smirida was transferred to a small
port called Moutsouna through an aerial transport system and from there with
ships it was exported to other countries.
The importance of smirida diminished
since other materials began to be used as industrial abrasives. The ancients used and traded this material called "Naxia land" or "Naxia whetstone". In Apiranthos
there is a geological museum, with exhibits from the region, which was created by Manolis Glezos.
